Bored on the Fourth of July

Actually, life has been anything but boring lately but it sounded like a really cool title for a post so I went with it. It is ironic that the more things going on in life that are “blog worthy” the less time you actually have to post them. This has been a fun and hectic week for our family. Monday was family night and we decided to go play mini-golf at Cherry Hill. My brother had taken Caleb and Abbi mini-golfing a few months ago and said it was pretty entertaining and I wanted my chance to play with my kids. It was pretty hot out but we had a really fun time. Caleb is a riot to watch. He takes a pretty good swing from the tee and then he chases down his ball, picks it up, puts it down about an inch from the hole and taps it in. He then throws his club up in the air Tiger Woods style and dances around…I wish I would have had the camera with me. It was a pretty fun family night. We had invited Grandpa Irv and Cassandra to join us and afterwards we enjoyed Thelma’s frozen lemondae at the Chery Hill Pie Pantry. Delicious stuff on a hot summer day!

After mini-golf we kicked off the independance day celebrations with the annual neighborhood fireworks extravaganza. I don’t know what was more amusing; watching the kids sit and stare at the fireworks or watching the men try to one-up each other with combinations of fountains without getting their eyebrows singed off. I have never been one to invest in a lot of fireworks, but Abbi and Caleb had such a great time that I decided this year to spend a few bucks and buy us some.

Tuesday Jami had my aunt color her hair which turned into quite an eventful evening. In the salon the color looked pretty good but when she got out into the natural light it was a really bright orange. She had told me she was going darker but when she got home she looked like the alien chick from the movie “the Fifth Element”. Perhaps I was a bit too harsh over it but we spent an hour or two trying to wash the color back which actually worked pretty well. After all the hair washing we went out to Wal-Mart and made our fireworks investment and came home and had our own little show in the driveway.

The fourth was hectic as usual. I played Golf early in the morning, then it was off to the world famous Kaysville parade. Attending the parade ranks right below root canal and two steps above a vasectomy in terms of enjoyment level for me. Actually watching my kids brings a lot of joy and entertainment. Caleb was especially hilarious when the high school band marched by. He is quite the little dancer and we all got a kick out of his new moves. He has added a jump and a spin to his repetoir of moves and it is pretty fun to watch. We came out of it soaking wet and with about three pounds of salt water taffy. I am glad Kaysville stills allows candy to be thrown. It is about the only redeeming value left in an otherwise commercial and rather boring parade.

After the parade we stopped by Irv’s barbeque/birthday celebration for Mike. We then headed home to get ready for our barbeque with friends. We invited the Johnsons and the Oylers over and enjoyed a BYOM pot-luck. The Johnsons brought corn they had cooked on their barbeque which was absolutely delicious and I have been craving ever since. Jami made a dessert she had been wanting to try to make which was an eclair cake. She was worried it was not going to turn out but was really quite delciious. Between the Oyler, Gunn and Johnson kids I was pretty run down after the barbeque but we loaded everyone into the car and headed back to Kaysville for the annual fireworks.

Unilke Kaysville’s parade, the fireworks do have a bit of a redeeming value to them. The problem is that the traffic afterwards is so misserable that you usually forget all about how good the fireworks are. My family has a pretty good “secret spot” that is close enough to get to hear the music they sync the fireworks up with. Last year the music and fireworks were really good but I could have walked home faster than we were able to drive home because of where we parked. This year I opted to park a little further and walk down which was a really good idea. The music this year was not as good but the firworks were good. Caleb loved the show and sat close to me the whole time and we ohhed and ahhed together. Abbi was sitting by her grandma and about half way through fell asleep. We are learning that Caleb is a night owl and Abbi shuts down at about 10 o’clock each taking after their mother and father respectively. My parkiing strategy paid off and we were actually home and in bed by 11 o’clock.

Thursday I took Abbi and Caleb to see Pixar’s Ratatouille. If you based the movie solely on it’s ability to hold my children’s attention the movie was a complete failure. I was pretty sure it was way over Caleb’s head except at one point I remember him saying, don’t kill the mouse. I love him. So despite the overall bordom I was percieving, he did make some connection to the main character. Abbi is usually a pretty good movie-goer but even she was asking when it was going to be over with about twenty miutes left. While I love Pixar’s movies I must agree with Abbi that the last three have been obssesively long. I would love to see them get them back to the reasonable length of a child’s attention span. Overall the animation was beautiful and the storyline, while a bit over my kids heads was well told and redeeming. I decided the main flaw in this movie is that the characters are not as enderring as in past movies nor was the writing quite as whitty. If I had to rate it I would only give it three stars. . . Look at me. Now I am a movie critic.

Friday we finally ran out of gas. Work was a chore just to motivate myself to do anything. They should rewirte the calendars to never have the fourth of July in the middle of the week ever again. We ended the night playing cards with our friends the Hadleys. Jami and Candece proceeded to kick the pants off of Todd and me in Canasta. Jami sometimes thinks the Lord hasn’t blessed her with too mant talents but I challenge anyone to beat her in a social game. you might win a few times but over the long run Jami wins at more games than anyone I have ever known.

  1. I hear ya with the middle of the week 4th. I might as well have taken Thursday and Friday off. I’m all for a Biggest Loser. Maybe we can get mom and dad involved. I know Sarah and Matt were all for it, too. Let’s talk about it next time we’re all together.

  2. You’re rating of the movie is pretty spot on with others that I’ve heard. All the real critiques are giving it huge stars, but every REAL person I talk to says it’s just OK.

What a whirlwind 4th. Ours was far less exciting and busy. Just a lazy day at home with a few sparklers in the back yard. I guess that’s life with two little babies.

  3. […] we all headed to our house for a pancake breakfast, Then it was off to watch the kaysville parade. My feelings for the kaysville parade haven’t changes much since last year. We do appreciate the fact that Dan and Danielle live along the parade route so we don’t haveto worry about reserving our spot like so many others who put their chairs out in the middle of the night. This years parade was as banal as expected but we literally came home with about 5 lbs of salt water taffy. The kids love the Parade and watching them is more entertaining than the parade ever will be. Even Logan got into picking up the candy. This years water fight portion of the parade was marred by a couple boys getting run over by one of the trailers. It happened not too far from where we were and looked much more serious than it actually ended up being. My guess is it was probably enough of an eye opener for the city that there won’t be a water fight portion of the parade next year. […]
