Too Hot to Wear Clothes

Summer has arrived in full force here in Utah. It’s been in the upper nineties most of the week. This morning we were up early and I drove past the bank and the sign read 92 degrees and it was barely nine o’clock. I was reminded of an experience I had while serving my mission. The weather in Belgium is typically pretty mild but one early August afternoon the heat and humidity was almost unbearable. All my companion and I wanted to do was get off the street and into someone’s cool house. We had a five o’clock appointment with an inactive member that we were both looking forward to. while we were at home taking an early dinner the inactive member called and said in broken english,

“Elders, you can’t come over tonight. It is just too hot to wear clothes.”

The gentelmen was probably 350+ lbs and the thought of him without clothes was enough to chill me for the rest of the evening. It has remained one of my favorite quotes from my mission however.

Last night was the annual FORTHGEAR family summer party. For a small company, the owners really go all out for our parties and it has become tradition to have a carnival at the park. They kicked off the event this year with a raffle where we one a Chili’s gift certificate and the kids both got little toys. We then enjoyed a great barbeque. After the food we enjoy two giant inflatable toys they have rented and set up in the park. This year we had a giant joust pit and a piarate themed obstacle course. At first the toys were almost unbearable because of the heat but they hosed them down and as long as you stayed on the shady spots it was okay. Abbi loved running through the obstacle course which ends with a 10 ft. climb followed by a slide. Caleb was pretty intimidated at first which meant I had to carry him through most of it, but as the evening went on he got more and more brave and by the end he was able to do the whole course by himself. Because of the heat it seemed like a lot more mellow party this year than in the past. Most people were content to sit in the shade and eat snowcones (I had four) and cotton candy. It was fun to mingle with the spouses of the people I work with although it was also a reminder of how much turnover we have at my company. It seems like every year about half the faces are new. We’ll see what the future holds for me.

  1. Ah, the heat. I can honestly say that I am glad I live in the comfortable Northwest and don’t have to endure another hot Utah summer. You know how well I do in extreme heat…
That party sounds awesome. What a great company! You still enjoying your job?
That quote from your mission is pretty funny. That was exactly how I felt last summer when I was 9 months pregnant, 80 pounds heavier and going through a record breaking heat wave without air conditioning. I feel for the guy!
