No More Training Wheels!

Abbi caught me by surprise this weekend by asking me if she could take her training wheels off her bike. She is not a very good bike rider with the training wheels on so I was a bit aprehensive to take them off (mostly because of the work I was sure would be required to put them right back on). It’s amazing what a little peer-pressure will do. She has a little friend who is about her same age but about half her size who darts around the cul-de-sac without trainers and I think Abbi was feeling a little heat to get them off – thus the request. I avoided taking them off all day Saturday but this evening we decided to take a walk down to our neighbors and she asked me again. I decided I was curious enough and she seemed adamant enough that it wouldn’t hurt to give it a try. Much to my surprise it did not take more than a a few yards down the road before she was off on her own and doing surprisingly well. It wasn’t until later tonight that I realized I had just had one of those special fatherly moments behind a childs bike as they struggle to get the hang of balancing on two wheels. Much like life, the lesson behind riding a bike is that you are best off if you just keep going. We get off course and lose our balance when we stop, panic and loose our momentum. I was proud of Abbi today and the way she overcame her fears and learned how to ride a bike. It was a special moment to share with her on Father’s Day. Now if she can only learn to turn, slow down and stop. . .

  1. Very sweet Adam. What a good Dad you are! Is it hard to watch them grow up so fast? Learning to ride a bike without the training wheels is like a right of passage to becoming a real “kid”. Next thing you know they are asking you to show them how to drive a car. Yikes.

  2. Ditto what Anissa says… great post, great landmark for both of you!
