Scuba Rocks

I had my first opportunity to try Scuba Diving tonight as part of a young men’s activity. The Dive Shop in Ogden offers a two hour trial course that was recommended to us by another young men’s group. We decided to give it a try and made our reservations. I was bumbed at first that I would have to miss the Jazz game and then two of our boys did not bring the proper medical releases to allow them to do the activity which caused some tension. After watching a twenty minute video we got in the pool and they explainded all the gadgets and hand signals that you use to communicate. It is a bit intimidating at first to have all that gear on and have someone telling you all the ways you could bring harm or death upon yourself if you do this or that, but once we finally got situated and actually had the opportunity to put the mask on and put our head under it was really just like breathing under water. They taught us a few basic skills: how to take your mask out of your mouth and put it back in under water, how to get the water out of your mask under water, how to relive the pressure in your ears at deeper depths and than they adjusted our suits for boyancy and then we got to play around. I spent about twenty minutes under water at about 12 feet playing with the random toys they had at the bottom of the pool. I am sure the whole purpose of the class is to intice you just enough that you will come back and get certified and spend the big bucks on the classes and gear. It was deffinately one of the cooler things I have done in awhile but I probably have enough expensive hobbies without adding one I could only use every once in awhile.

  1. Very cool. I’d love to give it shot for free like that. DJ probably couldn’t do it… too closterphobic (i’m sure the spelling of that word is wrong, but if memory serves me correctly, you are just as bad as I am at spelling and wouldn’t know the difference either way). :)
