“Because I knew you…”

My cousin Duncan passed away October 4th, 2008. His funeral was October 9th. We attended the funeral and said our goodbyes to our beloved friend and cousin Duncan Howard. Duncan was a special person in our lives and we will miss him tremendously. It takes a lot for me to truly get emotional and I had surpressed my emotions pretty well throughout the week. With things being busy at work and having a short week and a lot to get done before we left I did not have a whole lot of time to emotionally think about the gravity and permanence of his passing. As we met Thursday morning for the family prayer the gravity and sadness of the situation set in and the emotions came freely. I’ve had friends and family pass away and have dealt with that in my life before but Duncan is the first person I have had pass away in my life since i have become the father of my own children. My heart was full for Syd and Troy and I began to feel the pain they must be feeling having lost a child. I don’t know what we would do or how we would get through without the hope and support of the gospel of Jesus Christ and the knowledge we have of his eternal plan.

The funeral service was special. Greyson did a great job paying tribute to his brother. As he had done for most of his life he helped voice some of Duncan’s feelings and the spirit was so incredible during his tribute. After Grey’s tribute Duncan’s Musical productions teacher’s sang the song “For Good” from the Musical Wicked. I am not familiar with the Musical but it was like it was written for that Moment.

I’ve heard it said
That people come into our lives for a reason
Bringing something we must learn
And we are led
To those who help us most to grow
If we let them
And we help them in return
Well, I don’t know if I believe that’s true
But I know I’m who I am today
Because I knew you…

I was so touched. If you’ve lost a friend I would suggest listening to that song. wow. After that song Syd shared a poem that her friend had written. It was a special tribute to Duncan. Duncan’s favorite color is Orange and as the leaves change each year we will have the chance to honor his life and what he taught us. Everyone at the funeral wore orange as a tribute to Duncan. When you would ask little Logan what color it was he would confidently say, “Duncan”. I don’t know how we will explain his response when he gets to school but in our family, that response is perfect.

Sadly, Jami and I had to leave as Syd was concluding her remarks to make our flight. I would really liked to have heard his father Troy’s remarks. He has been the family’s rock through this emotional event. We cried our way to the airport and everything went as planned as we boarded our flight.
