High School Musical Madness

Caleb's High School Musical Shirt

My sister Sarah works for Farmington City. As part of their arts program the city is putting on a stage production based on Disney’s High School Musical. While Abbi and Caleb are far too young to participate (thank goodness) Sarah did get them both T-shirts. As Sarah knows, I was very skeptical about my son wearing a High School Musical shirt but appearantly the show is popular with both genders and I really should have nothing to fear as a father. The reach the media has on our children now is incredible. From High School Musical to Hanna Montana it seems like the under 15 demographic is driving quite a bit these days. It was all we could do to talk Abbi out of being “Sharpay” from High School Musical for Halloween. The Hanna Montana concert here in Salt Lake broke a record previously held by U2 for the quickest Sellout in history. While Abbi (and Caleb) enjoy Disney channel shows like Hanna Montana, The Suite Life and Cory in the House, Jami pointed out an interesting observation that most of the humor and drama of those shows is derived from the characters either disobeying authority (particularly parents) or trying to cover something up through disobedience. While the story lines often play out the consequences of their bad choices, they still create a sense of accebtability in “a little” disobedience or “a little” dishonesty. I am sure this is nothing new to television but it is impacting society with such a broad brush these days we have to be extra vigilant as parents. With all that said I can’t say I did not try to win my daughter a ticket to the Hanna Montana concert – hoping to be her hero.
