Abbi’s First Soccer Game

Abbi had her very first soccer game on Saturday. We were lucky to find a nice pair of soccer shoes at the DI Friday night and she loves putting on her pink and blue soccer uniform. Her games are really early Saturday mornings. They start at 8:30 am and the format is for them to train and work as a team for about 30 minutes on technique and rules and then they play a short 20 minute game against another team. There are five girls on each team and they play 3 on 3 on little fields with little pop-up goals. Abbi sat out 2 of the 4 quarters which was frustrating but the coach has assured us he has a rotation planned and everyone will play equally. I have been working with Abbi in the back yard and was pretty optimistic that she was “getting it” but the whole game experience was very overwhelming for her. It was typical little kid soccer with six girls all clumped in a ball kicking at the ball but mostly kicking each other in the shins. Abbi was content to just let the other girls kick it around and she just kind of watched from the outside. I hoped she would at least understand that the other team was NOT supposed to score and it was her job to get in the way but that whole phase of the game was a bit beyond her. I have to keep everything in perspecive – it is the first game. unfortunately for her I saw a lot of the “Gunn family organized sports” traits that lead me to believe she may score more goals for the other team than she ever will for her own…

  1. There is no shame in scoring goals for the other team!!! How many times do I have to say that?!!
