Balloon Festival 2007

Last weekend (I am a bit behind in my blogging) we made our annual pilgrimage to the 2007 Ogden Valley Balloon Festival. Jami and I have been making the morning trek to Eden, Utah for the past four summers. I got involved in supporting the event when one of my clients, Wolf Creek Resort, took over the management of the event and asked me to develop a logo for them. Our family has loved hot air balloon events ever since we were little and made the annual trip to visit family in albequrque. This event does not in any way rival the beauty or magnitude of the albequrque event but the Ogden Valley is a beautiful setting for a balloon launch and for the past four years we have slowly talked more and more of the family to join us and now it is a tradition we look forward to. In a way it marks the end of the summer for our family. Getting up that early you can tell the weather is changing and the mornings are a bit colder.
We have been blessed with great ballooning weather for the event the past three years so we were due for a less than perfect year and a really big thunderstorm blew thru on friday night so I was a bit skeptical if we should get up and go saturday morning but when I awoke and went to check the air was calm and it looked like a nice morning so we got in the car and started the 45 minute drive up to Eden. We got there just in time and everything looked positive for an exciting launch. The balloons crews were starting to unroll the canopys and the field was full of probably 15-20 balloons. about 7:30 a few balloons started to inflate and everyone got excited. After awhile the field was full of 10 or so canopys being inflated and excitement began to mount. a couple balloons took off and we cheered them into the air. Then it was as if everyone decided to just hang around and do nothing. The eight or so balloons that were up stayed on the ground and the rest of the crews didn’t even start inflating their’s. I finally went up to one of the pilots and asked what was going on and he said they had recommended that the pilots not take off due to an impending storm off to the south. It seemed silly to us since the storm was way off in the distance and the air would carry them away from the storm but what do I know about ballooning and meterology?
We hung around for a little while. My sister one some concert tickets she will probably not use from one of the sponsors. then we headed home and grabbed a family breakfast at Ganny Annies compliments of my dad – Thanks Dad!
The storm to the south made the lighting less then stellar for balloon photos this year but below are a few group shots and others that were okay. . .

A lot of my better shots were taken inside the canopy

If you can’t tell I like photographing balloons – it’s addictive.

This was as close as I came to a group shot.
I don’t know where Sarah and Jenny were? Sorry guys.

  1. Caleb’s face in that picture of Thing 1 and Thing 2 is priceless!

  2. We just can’t get out of the house that early! Maybe next year we can do that for pictures sake… great photos!
